Examples of Goodwin's Theory

Panic At The Disco: This Is Gospel

This video contains:
1)Lyrics which match visuals- During the chorus when he says 'If you love me let me go' he gets up and tries to escape. 'Don't try to sleep through the end of the world Bury me alive 'Cause I won't give up without a fight' As he sings these lyrics we see him being put inside a coffin and literally being buried alive.

2)One of the main things I love about the video is how well its edited to match the song's rhythm and pace. In the very first scene, for example, the medic's hands all move perfectly in sync to the beat and during the chorus the scene goes into slow motion, as the chorus isn't very fast paced and also for dramatic impact.

3)Prior to this video most of the band's members left and so currently most of their fan base are more familiar with the lead singer and prefer him to the other band members, so in this video he was the main focus and as there were lots of close-up shots of him.

Example: Kickstarts

1) Lyrics and visuals- 'might be  holding your hands but I'm holding it loose' the camera cuts to them holding hands.

2)The entire video has multiple close-up shots of him and is edited to match the fast beat of the song

3) It has some references to Charlie Chaplin's bread dance from gold rush

Andrew Goodwin Theory

According to Andrew Goodwin's theory, there are 5 key elements in a music video which we should look for in every  music video as an audience.

These elements are:
1) Linking lyrics of the songs to the visual elements in the video; e.g. in Katie Perry's music video the the tiger appeared as she said roar.
2) Matching the beats or rhythm of the music to the visual elements in the video, this is mainly done by editing.
3) Artists, taking part in the video by acting out some kind of central role.

4) Technical aspects in a music video- editing, mise-en-scene, camera shots and angles etc.

5) Containing intertextual references from books, news, films etc.
