Mac1 - Prelim
We did our prelim on the song 'Rockstar' by Nicleback. We choose to do this song as we felt that the shots were easier to replicate, eventhough the backgrounds and costumes don't match exactly it was easier to replicate this video's atmosphere. One of the other reasons we chose this video was because it has a series of different narrators which allowed all of us to take part in this prelim and made it easier for us to determine which of us had the best lip-syncing skills for the main music video. There are however, many technical problems with this prelim for example our tripod was unstable for majority of the shots and as a result the shots turned out slightly wonky, so as a result of this we have learnt how to use the equipment better as well.

Rotoscoping
One of my all time favourite music videos: Take On Me
I love the animation used in this video, it known as rotoscoping. Rotoscoping is a drawn animation which mimics real live action videos, I love the effect achieved by doing this, this video itself was made by hand drawn illustrations traced from a series of projections, in presents times it is possible to replicate this effect using photoshop. Even though it is a very time consuming process it might be worth it to somehow incorporate it into our video.

Kodaline- All I Want
I loved this music video, as it had an extremely strong concept behind it, and was beautifully shot. This video is shot in the protagonist's (the man with facial reconstruction) perspective witch allows us to see his life from his viewpoint this makes the audience feel very emotionally attached to his character and makes us empathise with, its a very similar feeling we have when we get attached to character in a book. The song itself would fall into an alternative genre and the music video goes against Andrew Goodwin's theory, as his theory indicates that all songs in the rock/alternative genre should have an element of performance in the video to promote their faces to the audience, however in this videos case I strongly disagree with his theory as the music video tells a touching story which would not be nearly as effective if the band had elements of a performance video, as it would completely disrupt the flow of the music video.

Case study 1
Fish Tank:
Director: Andrea Arnold

Katie Jarvis as Mia Williams
Kierston Wareing as Joanne William
Michael Fassbender - Connor O'Reily
Rebecca Griffiths - Tyler William
Harry Treadaway - Billy
Sydney Mary Nash - Keira O'Reily
Sarah Bayes - Keely
Box office success (revenue): Fish tanks was officially released on September 11th and grossed a total of £103,180 within the first weekend of release. The film made a total of £332,488 in the UK, $374,675 in the USA and worldwide made a total of $1,986,709
Awards won:The film won the 'Jury Prize' at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. It also won the 2010 BAFTA for Best British Film.
Critics':
Presently the film has a 90% "certified fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 'a total of 132 reviews.David Denby from 'The New Yorker's' says, "Fish Tank may begin as a patch of lower-class chaos, but it turns into a commanding, emotionally satisfying movie, comparable to such youth-in-trouble classics as 'The 400 Blows' "
Representation of women: The film presents lower class women as poorly educated who are very objectified by men, an example of this would be the scene (near the beginning of the film) where the girls are dancing and the men beside them are watching them , making it seem as if they are dancing especially for the men. The scene where the mother pinches her younger daughter and drags her out of the room goes against the stereotypes of mothers being very affectionate towards her children and creates a very bad image of younger mother who in this particular case are presented as being very selfish and unaffectionate towards their children. It also presents younger children as being very confused and deprived as they don't have a father figure, in the scene where Mia takes away Connor's daughter the difference between the two is very clear as Kiera is presented as a very typical spoilt privileged child which is shown through her sparkly pink clothing and perfect hair which completely contrasts with Mias dark black clothing, and in a way makes it seem as if Kiera is and has everything Mia every wanted and her jealousy makes drives her to push the little girl into the ocean.

Prelim Ideas
1) This Is Gospel- Panic At The Disco
As a group we really like this song, because of its brilliant hands choreography as well as the song itself. We thought the first 20 seconds would be very easy to replicate, however it doesn't contain a lot of lip-syncing during those first 20 seconds which defeats the purpose of the preliminary task. Also we don't have a male narrator to lip-sync
2)Taylor Swift- You Belong With Me
This music video is simple and some areas are easy to replicate shot for shot, the area we were hoping to replicate were 36s-56s.
3)Love Story- Taylor Swift
We were considering filming the last 20 seconds of this music video in Trent park's field, this song (as well as the one above) have female narrators making it easier for us to replicate it shot for shot. It would be quite hard to replicate the shots of her at the castle, but we were considering filming those shots at forty hall.
4)Nicleback- Rockstar
One of my favourite songs and eventhough the song has a male singer it uses many different people as narrators, this way all of our group would be able to take part in the prelim. Also this music video is completely made up of people lip-syncing which is the main purpose of our preliminary task.

AS Evaluation
AS table
Digital Tech: We used Panasonic cameras to film the opening, experimented with Photoshop for one of our opening credits; however we didn't end up using it as it didn't look as professional, we used to smaller macs and using i-movie to edit our opening. For our opening credits we also learned how to use a series of transitions e.g. fades and cross-zooms for our flashbacks etc.
Planning & Research: Watched openings of a similar genre to our genre e.g. 'Bend it like Beckham' and 'Goal'. We went to the Arsenal stadium to plan out all our shots and practised some of our camera work there, we also storyboarded every shot we wanted for our opening. We looked at several songs to play throughout (we looked at happy upbeat songs as we felt it would suit our genre best) our opening and blogged about that research.
Technical Elements(camera shots and angles): We used a wide range of shots to film our opening e.g. tilt shots wide shots, high angle shots close-ups etc. For our setting we used shots at the stadium to show her journey to the Arsenal game and used shots of her at the field to show her flash backs, a change of settings were needed to make the flash backs look completely different to the stadium shots.
Conventions of real media products: Most of our footage was hand held as we felt that it suited our genre better and went very well with the upbeat fast paced music used. We also looked at different film opening credits to see which looked most professional, we liked the Skyfall's opening credits the most and decided to add cross fade transitions to our opening credits. We also looked at teen/drama films like 'Angus Thongs and Perfect snogging' which had very upbeat songs playing throughout the opening to match the fast paced shots. We also choose to use an upbeat song for our opening as we felt it went with the genre and our fast paced hand held footage.

Song Ideas...
Ideas of songs we may use for our music video:
Paramore-Crazy Girls
Really liked the melody of this song and also the lyrics as it would be easy to link its lyrics to visual scenes in our music video. Also the narrative would have to be a girl since it is sung by a female artist, making it easier for our group to make a music video (since our group consists only of girls).
A Day To Remember- Since You've Been Gone
Loved the guitar in this son and could picture creating a performance video for it, however the main problem is the narrative is male, so it would be harder to organise it with someone outside our media group. Also the song already has a brilliant official music video so it would be a lot more difficult to make a music video that matches up to it.
A Day To Remember- All I Want
We are The Ocean-Waiting Room
You Me At Six-Fresh Start Fever

Inspirational music video
Writings on the wall
This music video is very cleverly done in one shot, using multiple illusions to trick the audiences eyes. The music video reminded me of the honda advert which also had to be shot in one go.
