Evaluation question 2 research

Was researching how different evaluations questions were answered in the past. I personally loved the use of the presentation software PowToon which I have discovered through the video above. and will experiment with it for my other evaluation questions.

These are my notes and prep for evaluation Q2 :

Magazine analysis 4

Magazine advert shows an image of the band with all the band members present, the lead singer is closest to the camera and takes up most of the frame showing that she is the focus of the image and therefore the most prominent member of the band. Their albums name is written at the front in big, bold letters to make it more prominent and their band name is written on the top left of the advert, it is highlighted in white which makes it stand out in contrast to everything else. They also have an image of the magazine cover on the right of the page so that the audience is familiar with the album cover (as none of the band members are on the cover). There is a small record label and company name written on the bottom right side of the page, promoting they're record company. Overall the image is warmly lit, which actually goes against the forms and convert ions of they're rock/alternative genre which indicated maybe the band are trying to appeal to a wider or different audience by changing they're image slightly.

Magazine advert analysis 3

This magazine advert has a key image of the lead singer, from a previous tour, so its an image all their fans are already familiar with. The image's framing and composition follows the rule of thirds making it an interesting shot, and the fact that he is the only band member shown proves that he is the focus of the band. He is dressed in dark clothing which conforms with his genre of music (alternative/rock) however there is a bright yellow spotlight behind him making his dark clothes stand out in contrast to the yellow light. The image is in low key lighting which conforms to their genre of alternative/rock music. The text is written in white and light yellow to stand out in contrast to the dark background. The bands name matches the font used for their album as well, creating synergy. It also, in the bottom left corner, advertises their new song as a free download track; promoting their new product.

Magazine Advert

   Final magazine advert-

This was the magazine advert I made as part of my ancillary task. I got the inspiration for my magazines layout from the Kasabians magazine advert:

Like the Kasabian advert, I placed my band name at the top in bigger Bolder writing, making it stand out more. I used a key image from my music video to advertise the band as well as their new album. To keep consistent  synergy within the products I used the same font as my music video and digipack covers on the magazine advert. I also added a link to the bands website as well as a twitter link, advertising and promoting the band more.

Researching for the magazine advert.....
To create my magazine advert I used the Photoshop software as I personally felt that is was the most versatile and effective program to use and due to its versatility it results in creating better products. However to experiment with other programs I also created another magazine advert using the software Fireworks-

Eventhough Fireworks was an easier software to use, it limits in what you can do. For example - in photoshop I used the blur tool to bur the background behind the text in the advert, this made the text clearer and bolder.

Magazine analysis 2

The cover of this magazine consists of the band 'My Chemical Romance. All of the band memebers are dressed in plain black clothing to conform with the rock genre, it was also in order to promote their ablum release 'Black Parade' throughout which their colour scheme for their album cover, as their album was dedicated to people who has passed away from cancer. The cover of the magazine is nicely composed with two members on both sides and the lead singer in the middle, as the lead singer formed the bands star image. The photograph is taken in a low angle to show them as powerful figures and the lead singer leans down and looks directly at the camera, showing his fans that he can relate to them on a personal level, breaking the furth wall and attracted more people to buy the magazine. At the top of the magazine the magazine's name is written in big bold white letters which make them more prominent. On the top left corner it says 'free CD' and promoting free merchendise with the magazine attracts more people, the 'Free CD' text is witthen in bloder letters, highlighted in green and placed at the top on the magazine, so that it catches the audience's eye easily. The bands name 'My Chemical Romace is written in the same style font as it was on their 'Black Parade' album, attracting their fans to buy the album as well as promoting the album to the magazines fans.

Magazine advert analysis...

http://www.wotyougot.com/pictures/kerrang-nirvana.jpeg
The front cover is clearly a reference to Nirvana's most succesfull album 'Nevermind'. Kurt Cobain mimicks the baby floating underwaterwith his arms spread out like the baby on the album cover. Thorugh this it is clear that this issue was made for Nirvana fans, in the top right corner it says 'Kurt Cobain 16 years gone' telling us that the main articles are on Kurt Cobain. The photo on the front cover is composed well , Kurt Cobain takes up most of the framemaking it clear that he is the main subject of the issue and attracting more nirvana fans as a result. The backround colour is a bright blue which is very eyecatching and would make the magazine stand out more in comparison to others. 'KERRANG' is the name of the magazine and is written boldly and clearly over the top. 'KERRANG' is written using black and white which make it stand out, also the colours of black and white conform with the convension of the rock genre. Underneath the magazine name, on the top left corner, is the band name 'NIRVANA' which is written in the same font as it was on Nirvana's 'Nevermind' album cover. Other additional information on the content and articles of the magazine is written at the bottom of the magazine. In particular the advert on the bottom left of the magazine promoting free posters buyers get in addition to purchasing the magazine,  which make the audience want to purchase the magazine more.

Inspirational Music Video......

I thought this video had a very strong narrator which worked in this case very effectively. It breaks the Andrew Goodwin theory as there aren't many shots of the band to create an indie image, however the video did contain a lot of lip syncing and close ups of the lead singer/narrator alone which helped create a star image. The video does however, adhere to Andrew Goodwin's theory of having visual links between lyrics in the video, as when  the protagonist sings 'Animal' we see shots of him surrounded by dead animals ( the fridge with butchers meat hanging from the ceiling).
The filming is executed brilliantly, the rule of thirds is followed frequently e.g. the long shot were the protagonist stands out in the rain next to the car. Low key lighting is used consistently in the video as well both as it conforms with the forms and conventions of this genre of music and to foreshadow unfortunate events which take place in the music video, it also contributes to creating a dark and mysterious atmosphere. we also se lots of eye line matches between the protagonist and the girl in throughout the music video, for example- around 1.51 into the video we see a midshot of him in the rain looking up at the girls window, the camera then cuts to a shot of the girl naked looking into the mirror. This concept also conforms to Laura Mulveys male gaze theory as the girl is constantly shown in minimal clothing to attract more male viewers, e.g.- the aerial shot of the girl lying half-naked on her bed.

Our music video so far...

As a group we are quite happy with our progress so far, we changed footage which show the past to black and white and put a filter over it (romantic filter) to make it very clear it shows the past. We also showed this video to our peers who gave us useful feedback by suggesting we have another midshot of the killer dropping a rock to symbolise him killing the protagonist making it clearer that he is the murderer.

Overlapping on i-Movie

Over lapping on i-Movie Tutorial-

In our music video, we show that the protagonist is dead and her spirit/ soul comes out of her and looks for her killer. In order to make this more clear to the audience we decided to use the overlapping setting on i-Movie. We wanted toachive the effect of the protagonist literally jumping out of her own body. We did this by filming the protagniist laying still on the gound for a few minutes, we then filmed her again getting uo and walking away. We then overlapped the two clips over each other and achived the visual effect we wanted.

Other music videos...

We also took some inspiration from another A2 music video we watched, we loved a few of the hand held close up shots used, eventhough the rule of thirds were broken the shots are still very interesting due to the brilliant hand held comera work and also makes it very clear that the man is the protagonist and therefoer the most important character, placing him in the middle of the frame helpedd emphasise this.

Inspirational music videos-

We were very inspired by the Maroon 5 Maps video. I personally loved the way they used normal objects as transitions into tthe next scene e.g. in the first scene ata the hospital they zoom into one of the lamps there which then zooms out onto car headlights in the next scene.  this music video goes against most of Andrew Goodwin's theories, as according to his theories all music videos falling under the alternative/rock genre should have a balance between performance and narrative. However this music video remains focused on a sole narrative which ,in my opinion, works better s it helps convey the storyline to the audience more clearly, if there had been cuts to performance scenes in the music video it may have made audience feel more detached to the protagonist resulting in felling less empathy for him, making the video less powerful and affective. The video also has symbolism embedded into it foreshadowing unfortunate events, for example in the scene where the protagonist goes to the party, there are close-up shots of bottles of alcohol and the lighting in general is dull and low key, this adheres to Sassure's theory on signifiers. This music video does however, follow Richard Dyer's theory of star quality and creating a star image, which this video does by having several close-ups of the protagonist/ lead singer constantly throughout the music video. In fact the first shot in the music video is a mid/handheld shot of Adam Lavigne in the lift.

Framing

Rule of thirds is a way of making your shots more interesting, there doesn't nessesarily have to be a symmetry in the shot. Its the concept of using an imaginary grid in each frame to compose the shots;

We used this rule to frame majority of our shots in our music video, as it made the shots far more interesting-

Idea development....

Looking back at all the footage we took at Trent park, we felt that as a group the video was too repetitive, so we came up with the concept of having a before and after our protagonists accident....

Digipack images.....

While filming I took some photographs of the protagonist for the album cover. Nothing is finalised yet this is just one of the ideas I have for the album cover:
Using this image as the front cover, maybe changing the colours on Photoshop to create a colder atmosphere, as she is supposed to have passed away. The band name would be in big bold letters on the top right of the photograph where the leaves are an the album title would go below that.

Use the second image below as the back of the album with our track list, I was thinking of changing this photograph to black and whit and overlaying the painting we wanted to include in out music video over it (by changing it's opacity in Photoshop), as the pathway in this photograph is very similar to the one in the painting and if they match up it might make a more interesting background.

Filming in Trent Park

Filming in Trent park was successful we got lots of footage (hopefully all our footage) and look forward to editing it ASAP.

We choose Trent Park as a location because it conformed to our alternative rock genre, as it was an isolated, remote area with nature and low-key lighting. This was similar to other bands such as Paramore in their music video decode in particular. Even though filming at Trent Park went smoothly the main problem we faced was the weather, because we filmed on a cloudy day (to get low key lighting and cold colouring) we filmed in rain which was inconvenient, nevertheless the footage was still unaffected.

This was the filming schedule we made using Microsoft Excel...

Filming today!

Finally filming today at Trent park, hopefully will get good footage so that we can start editing!!!!
