We went to the BFI and learnt more about producing good music videos. We had two speakers who talked us through what key elements were needed to make an effective music video

New Case Study

This is our new case study which has representations of both women and youth.

Amazing Stop-Motion videos......

Amazing and original music video concept, I loved the way the video linked with the lyrics and found it to be very non-cliche, I also lived the way the video was edited perfectly to the beat especially near the beginig of the music video when the piano played.

This is another amazing stop motion video, and what I thought was most effective throughout the video were the aming use of sound effects which really made the eniter thing seem a lot more realistic, as well as the interaction between the drwaings and real life objects e.g, the scene where the dinosaur roars and and as a result a real live person gets blown ayway.

Voyeurism

Voyeurism basically refers to the idea of objectifying peolple in media for the viewers to gain pleasure. Majority of the time it is women who are objectified in the media, according to Andrew goodwins theory females are objectified through the use of certain camera work/shots, for example in whams video of club tropicana the women are objectified through using fragmented shots of their body parts.

Inspirational music video still shots....

I personally loved the way the shot is framed the split screen works extremely effectively, as the body parts match up perfectly. The background was kept simple and plain to keep the focus on the body parts in the split screen however the split screens themselves each had a slightly different background which helped the audience differentiate the split screens from each other.

Lip syncing with split screen was also amazingly done as the different split screens changed to the beat of the music.

Overall this video was very visually affective due to its original split screening and editing techniques. It adheres to Andrew Goodwin's theory of having a balance of lip-syncing and narrative throughout the music video. It also contains intertextuality, as it has the link to Charlie Chaplin's dancing potatoes scene from ' Gold Rush', It also has visual links to the lyrics, e.g.- around 21s into the video there is a split screen and on the left side a close-up shot of him holding the girls hand where he sings 'might be holding your hand but I'm holding it loose'. The video was filmed carefully most of the shots with a single figure broke the rule of third to keep the focus on that particular figure, however most of the shots which contained more than two people followed the rule of thirds. The video also conforms to Richard Dyer's theory of creating a star image as the video constantly shows close-ups of the protagonist (Example).

Richard Dyer

Richard Dyers star theory revolves around the idea that icons that celebraties are simply used by certain entertainment intstitutions for financial gain. He views stars as people who are used to represent 'real people' experiencing real emotions. He also belives that stars in the industry are created by the music industry for the sole purpose of making money from audiences, who react to star’s personality by buying records and becoming fans.

His theory is broken down to 3 categories:

1. Audiences and Institutions
2. Constitutions
3. Hegemony

Audience and Institutions

he believes that to most entertainment companies stars are used soley for making money. By adverising these stars and promoting them to audiences increases sale across all forms of media.
These institutions then model the artist around the target audience they choose. For example Lady GaGa, was created to appeal around fashion forward people so the audience can relate to her as a person as well as her her music.

Hegemony

Is basiclly the theory that the audience relates to the star as they believe they either have similarities with the star or admire somthing about them. This slowly eveloves from an admiration to idolisation of the star, and this could be seen as both a positive and ngative thing, in todays world particularly this thery can be used as more and more of the younger generation idolises theyse stars and in a way tries to morph themselves into the idols.

New story board!!!!!

Our new story board ideas.....

Re-drafting

This was our first story board:

Unfortunately we thought it would be less realistic to have models as the protagonists girlfriend so we decided to redo our idea by sticking to an ordinary girl and cut out the videos out protagonist was edition at the begining of the video.

Another idea change.......

Primarily we had planned to show our protagonist going on dates with models, however we have now changed that idea and made it so out protagonist just has one girlfriend (who isn't a model) as it makes the video simpler and the concept clearer and easier to understand.
