Richard Dyer

Richard Dyers star theory revolves around the idea that icons that celebraties are simply used by certain entertainment intstitutions for financial gain. He views stars as people who are used to represent 'real people' experiencing real emotions. He also belives that stars in the industry are created by the music industry for the sole purpose of making money from audiences, who react to star’s personality by buying records and becoming fans.

His theory is broken down to 3 categories:

1. Audiences and Institutions
2. Constitutions
3. Hegemony

Audience and Institutions

he believes that to most entertainment companies stars are used soley for making money. By adverising these stars and promoting them to audiences increases sale across all forms of media.
These institutions then model the artist around the target audience they choose. For example Lady GaGa, was created to appeal around fashion forward people so the audience can relate to her as a person as well as her her music.

Hegemony

Is basiclly the theory that the audience relates to the star as they believe they either have similarities with the star or admire somthing about them. This slowly eveloves from an admiration to idolisation of the star, and this could be seen as both a positive and ngative thing, in todays world particularly this thery can be used as more and more of the younger generation idolises theyse stars and in a way tries to morph themselves into the idols.
